New data has confirmed it was an exceptionally warm and wet September in Whakatāne.
According to NIWA's Climate Summary, Whakatāne observed it's wettest September since records began in 1952.
Whakatāne recorded 287mm of rainfall last month, which is 324% of it's normal for September.
Whakatāne also recorded it's warmest September on record with a mean temperature of 13.7 degrees Celsius. It's the highest recorded in Whakatāne since records began in 1974.
NIWA revealed, Whakatāne was one of 14 locations nationwide which set it's new record high September mean temperatures.
Kawerau's mean temperature last month was 13.3 degrees Celsius, it's fourth-highest on record.
