Slip repair work has begun along State Highway 35 between Ōpōtiki and Te Kaha, with motorists advised to expect delays.
Depending on weather conditions, the stretch of road near Te Kura o Tōrere will be reduced to one lane for up to six months.
Waiotahi Contractors and the Transport Rebuild East Coast (TREC) team are leading the project, which involves repairing both an underslip (below the highway) and an overslip (above).
Waka Kotahi has announced that Stop/Go traffic management and speed restrictions will be in place throughout the duration of the works. Drivers should anticipate delays of up to 10 minutes.
A temporary safety barrier will also be installed down the centre of the highway to help protect both road users and construction crews.
Due to limited space around the site, TREC has established an onsite office on the Te Kura o Tōrere grounds. While crew members will be using the driveway, they have been instructed to avoid it during busy school pick-up and drop-off times.
Clear signage will be in place to guide the community safely through the area.
