One man has been taken into custody after an incident at the Murupara Police station.

Police allege the man smashed a glass door to get into the unmanned station on Pine Drive around 6:45am Wednesday.

Acting Bay of Plenty District Commander, Inspector Lincoln Sycamore said a vehicle was not used to gain entry to the station.

Pine Drive was cordoned off, with armed police and the Police Negotiation Team at the scene.

“An axe and machete were located during a search of the man’s vehicle, along with a chainsaw that had been thrown over a fence,” Sycamore said.

Sycamore said the negotiation team engaged with the man before he was arrested, just after midday.

Police are considering charges against the man and Pine Drive is back open to the public.

“I want to commend our attending staff on their response to this incident, negotiating a tricky situation to get a peaceful resolution,” Sycamore said.

He said Police want to thank the Murupara community “for their cooperation and understanding while this incident unfolded.”

Sycamore added, while they understand these incidents can be distressing, Police do not believe “there's any risk to public safety during or following today’s events.”
