MetService Data Proves Heavy Downpour In Whakatāne

Latest figures from MetService has proved it was an exceptionally wet 24 hours in Whakatāne earlier this week.

MetService's automatic weather station at Whakatāne Aero recorded 159.4mm of rain from May 2nd until this morning.

However, MetService revealed most of the rain (134.4mm) fell between midday on the 1st until midnight on May 2nd. 13.8mm then fell between 1-2pm on May 2nd.

"This was from a front embedded in a moist northerly flow which affected the area in the first couple days of the month (this same front is currently affecting the western portion of the country now)," says MetService Meterologist, April Clark.

"For context, Whakatāne aero on average records 140.6mm of rain in May, so we are already over that 4 days into May,"

"The wettest May on record was in 341.2mm in 2005." Clark says.
