Death shocks divers and boaties

The death of an Eastern Bay diver has shocked other divers and boaties in the region.

Wiremu Kingi died while diving near Tasman Reef on Sunday morning.

Nearby boaties heard the calls for help from the boat skipper and came to their assistance.

Paramedics from the Whakatane Rescue Vessel performed CPR for about 40 minutes but were unable to revive Mr Kingi.

Coastguard says while the incident's a tragedy, it shows how other boaties and water users are providing valuable help to each other.

The matter has been referred to the coroner.
