The Eastern Bay's Youth MP supports plans to reduce to zero, the amount of alcohol young drivers are allowed to consume.
The move is timely for the Bay of Plenty, after the death of one teenager and more than 20 teens being hospitalised, as a result of accidents Police believe involved alcohol.
Whakatane High's Emma Lucas sees enforcing a zero-alcohol tolerance, as a step forward.
She says when young people are given responsibilities, it's a good idea to give them some rules to comply with, to keep them accident free, or keep accident numbers down.
The Bay of Plenty's Road Policing Manager is also welcoming the law change.
Inspector Kevin Taylor says the reforms have been discussed for sometime, and it's good to see them being signed on to.
He believes it's a step in the right direction to make our roads safer.
He says in terms of under 20 year olds having a zero limit, these are our young people who are just learning how to drive.
